CAEZAR

I didn’t sleep that night, but I thought about it. The temptation was there, contained within the warmth of her long legs and lovely curves as she dreamed in my arms.

I hadn’t held a woman since Sofia. I hadn’t wanted to.

I hadn’t trusted myself.

Until now.

In every female form, there was always danger. The chance was always present that the woman I took into my embrace might not be the one I’d chosen. Ishatha could twist her appearance to match that of any woman in the world. That made every woman in the world a risk if I let my guard down and let them in.

Allesandra and Everleigh were safe to be near. I’d never felt lust for them. Allesandra was a loyal friend, not a romantic interest. The place Everleigh held in my heart was that of a rebellious younger sister, someone I could watch over and keep safe. Ms. Heuer, my ex-assistant, couldn’t have been less attractive to me. I knew demons less spiteful and cruel.

Even the models I hired to accompany me to events never had any chance of getting close to me. They hung on my arm for a night, took their pay, and went home without so much as a kiss on the cheek.

Anything more than that, and Ishatha would have tracked them down. She would have stolen their looks, their personalities, even their scents to cloak herself with.

She would have used their bodies to get to mine.

I couldn’t allow that to happen. Not after Sofia.

Ishatha, queen of the vaellia, had taken my wife from me. It was a price too high to forgive or forget. She would never have any part of me. Not my body, not my heart, not my soul. I’d built a fortress around myself to keep out anyone she could possibly use to try to get near me, for my own safety, and for theirs. For a thousand years, it had worked.

And then, along came Lilia Cage.

I smoothed her red waves away from her shoulder, revealing that heart-shaped birthmark that suggested her true heritage. Vaellia. My curse. My salvation.

Everything was possible now that I held her body against mine.

I kissed the mark, then brushed my nose against her skin. I breathed her in and let myself enjoy that scent that was only hers. Unreplicable.

I’d left no room for doubt about it last night.

She was only her.

The fire inside her was irresistible. So was that wound inside her, the one that had her panicking at the sight of a roulette table and in tears at the memory of everything she’d lost. She was fearless, injured but fearless. Just as wary as I was. Just as headstrong. Just as unconquerable and restrained.

We were alike, the two of us. Maybe that was why her body called to me.

We both knew what it was like to put on a brave face and carry on, despite the pains of our pasts.

Feeling her release herself to me had somehow loosened the bonds of my own guilt and heartache, even if only for a brief, fleeting moment.
